Llancaiach Fawr was once named as one of the Top Ten most haunted buildings in Britain.

Llancaiach Fawr Manor stands proudly, as it has done since about 1550, overlooking the Glamorgan Uplands, and is considered to be one of the most important Gentry houses to have survived from the period.

Built for Dafydd ap Richard, the Manor was designed to be easily defended during the turbulent reigns of Tudor kings and queens.

The original defensive design incorporated a single entrance, four-foot thick walls enclosing spiral stone staircases for access between floors and stout wooden doors.

The Manor has been the scene of multiple ghostly occurrences, from both staff at the manor house and visitors.

The most ‘famous’ ghost is that of Mattie, a housekeeper from the 19th Century. She is believed to be the most active, or most seen. Reports of hearing the rustle of her petticoats have been heard in the bed-chamber where it is believed she died tragically and the sound of keys jangling in the corridors. Upstairs in the bedrooms, further stories were told of a little boy who fell to his death. He has previously made his presence known by tugging ladies dresses or trying to hold their hand.

Other prominent apparitions that haunt the manor house are that of two children, these children have been heard giggling and playing throughout the house on many occasions and will even play tricks and pranks on members of the staff and the public. Staff members have reported feeling children tugging on their costumes, and on one occasion, a visitor was stunned when he placed his hand on the staircase bannister and felt a cold, small hand on top of his.

The main occurrence that is reported by both staff and guests is the chatty nature of the entities in the Llancaiach Fawr Manor house. Ghostly voices are heard regularly inside the house.
